Immigration and Same-Sex Couples The government has also made some changes to immigration laws affecting foreign gays and lesbians trying to join their partners in Canada. Bill C-11 means queer Canadians will be able to sponsor their common-law partners as "family status" immigrants instead of having to go the more convoluted "humanitarian and compassionate grounds" route.
