Publication of first Canadian lesbian journal, Long Time Coming, by autonomous lesbian group, Montreal Gay Woman, originally women's committee of Gay McGill.

Globe and Mail and Toronto Star refuse to publish classified ad soliciting subscriptions for The Body Politic.

Spring / Toronto
Formation of new gay rights group, Gay Alliance Toward Equality (GATE).

April 30 / Toronto
Newsweb Enterprises, printing company controlled by Toronto Star, refuses to print Issue 8 of TBP following battle over classified ads.

June 30 / Toronto
First lesbian conference in Canada held at YWCA (21 McGill Street).

Summer / Toronto
Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) given first mission status in Canada. Begins holding services at Holy Trinity Church under Rev Bob Wolfe.

Operation Socrates Handbook, one of the first education / information publications of gay movement, printed by Waterloo University's [sic; Universities'] Gay Liberation Movement.

Windsor Gay Unity tries to place classified ad for gay dance in Windsor Star and is refused.

August / Vancouver
First issue of Gay Tide published by GATE - Vancouver.

August / Toronto
Canadian Gay Archives founded by The Body Politic, with newspaper's back files as foundation.

Gay Pride Week becomes a national celebration. Political theme: sexual orientation in provincial human rights codes.

August 25 / Toronto, Vancouver
Simultaneous demonstrations in both cities as part of Gay Pride Week.

September / Toronto
Club Baths opens at 231 Mutual Street. First of modern gay-operated bathhouses in Canada.

September 27 / Windsor
Windsor Press Council decides Windsor Star had unfairly discriminated against Windsor Gay Unity in refusing to publish classified ad (see July 18, 1973).

October / Montreal
Opening of gay bookstore, Androgyny.

October 6-7 / Quebec City
First pan-Canadian conference of gay organizations, hosted by Centre humanitaire d'aide at [sic; et] de libération (CHAL).

October 10 / Toronto
City council passes resolution banning discrimination in municipal hiring on basis of sexual orientation. First such legislation in Canada. Called "our first win" by TBP.

December 2 / Vancouver
Vancouver Sun refuses classified subscription ad for Gay Tide. GATE organizes demo outside Sun building.

December 15 / Washington, DC
American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders, following three years of pressure from gay liberation movement.
