What we got: The details
Stories from The Body Politic and
Xtra, 1974 to 1997
Introduction
I began this as a working record for my own use in preparation of What we demanded; What we got, following up on We Demand, from the August 28, 1971 protest on
Parliament Hill. It became a rather large document (appx 18,000 words), but it's now
broken up into 10 pages, including this one.
What we demanded; What we got tells the same
stories in briefer form. But, having compiled all these details I decided to make them
available here. The headlines leading off each entry, and the quotations many contain, give
a taste of the times -- and the entire record shows just how much time it can take to achieve (or nor achieve) legislative reforms.
This record covers some of the same ground as Victories and defeats: A gay and lesbian chronology 1964 -
1982, which originally appeared in Flaunting It! and is now here online.
But it goes well beyond 1982 and focuses on federal law reform -- which for many
years took a back seat to municipal and provincial efforts.
Some notes:
- Order and dates: Entries are in order by cover dates of The Body
Politic and, from 1987, Xtra. Where TBP carried a two-month date
(e.g., Dec 77 / Jan 78), only the first month is given. Issues were usually released around
the middle of the month preceding the cover date. Those dated Oct 1975 to Aug 1976
covered two months but were dated for the last month (e.g., the Oct 1975 issue was
released in Aug 1975).
- Comprehensiveness: Not! Some stories are not recorded, especially from
1990 through 1995; for that period I looked only at issues of Xtra (or most of
them) carrying news noted in its year- end compendiums. Other sources were also used for
What we demanded; What we got, and are noted
there. (Another one used here: John Robert Colombo: The Canadian Global
Almanac, Macmillan Canada, 1994.)
