Your class project is to locate periodicals that have been produced for African-American gay men or Asian-Canadian lesbians. Rather a daunting endeavour.

Your public library can't locate anything; the local university library is also of little help. But, someone has given you the name and telephone number of the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives. Already this sounds very promising.

CLGA staff check H. Robert Malinowsky's International Directory of Lesbian and Gay Periodicals (1987). The subject entry, "Black," gets you to a list of fourteen titles, including valuable publishing information. But how do you find these?

If you are lucky enough to find a copy of Alan V. Miller's Our Own Voices: A Directory of Lesbian and Gay Periodicals, 1890-1990 (1991), you can also discover CLGA's complete holdings. Entries under "Black" include over fifty periodicals, but many are not in CLGA's collection.

A third source of information is a subject search on the Internet. Using a search engine, like Lycos, you find little except a lead to the "Black Homie" page. Here is the complete list of serials, "the family of BLK publications" at http://www.blk.com/blk/blkhome.htm Link opens in a new browser window. Again, a useful site but you still can't locate copies of the periodicals.

You repeat the search strategies using "South Asian," "Latino/latina," "Hispanic," and find even less material.

In 1995, CLGA took its periodical holdings and moved them into an Inmagic database. Searching several of the indexed fields for the terms "African-American" or "Black," the following periodicals are found (dates of publication appear in brackets):

  • BWMT Los Angeles [Black & White Men Together] (1987-91),
  • BWMT New York (1980-85),
  • BWMT Pittsburgh (1995),
  • BWMT San Francisco (1980-85),
  • BGM [Black Gay Male] (1991),
  • Black and White Men Together Boston (1984),
  • Black CAP Newsletter [Toronto] (1991-95),
  • Black Fire (1992),
  • Black Lace [lesbian content] (1991),
  • Black Lesbian and Gay Centre Project Newsletter (1990-94),
  • Black/Out (1986),
  • Blackheart (1984-85),
  • Blackleather (1994),
  • Blacklight (1980-82),
  • Blk (1989-94),
  • Kuumba (1991),
  • MACT NY [Men of All Colors Together] (1985-95),
  • Moja (1978-79),
  • NABWMT Journal/Newsletter [National Association of Black & White Men Together] (1989-91),
  • Other Black Woman [lesbian content] (1981),
  • Other Countries (1985).

You make another attempt using "Asian" or "India" and other titles are located:

  • Anamika [lesbian content] (1985),
  • Asian and Friends Chicago News (1986-88),
  • Asian Lesbians of the East Coast Newsletter (1984), Asian Wind [Japan] (1992),
  • Bombay Dost [Bombay] (1990-92),
  • Celebrasian [Toronto] (1983-95),
  • Chhota Khayal [Toronto] (1989-95),
  • Gay Scene [Calcutta] (1978-80),
  • Khush Coming Events [Toronto] (198 ),
  • Khush Khayal (1989),
  • Phoenix Rising (1988),
  • Sami Yoni [Toronto] (1993),
  • Trikon: Gay and Lesbian South Asians (1987-88),
  • Trikon Chicago Newsletter (1987).
A third search, using "Latino/latina" or "Hispanic" produces:
  • Boletin Informativo pare America Latina (1988),
  • Escondido [Toronto] (1993-94),
  • SLAGH [Bahia] (1985),
  • Solidarity [Rio de Janeiro] (1990),
  • Orto Lado [Mexico City] (1992),
  • Noticias (1986-87).
You are tempted to check "South Africa" but find most titles are produced for a predominantely white male audience:
  • Exit (1986-95),
  • GLOW Letter (1992),
  • GX (1995),
  • Gay Between (1983),
  • Link (1982-85),
  • OLGA News (1991),
  • SA Gay Scene (1975-76).
Japanese titles at CLGA include:
  • Adon (1985-87),
  • Asian Wind (1991),
  • Bara-zoku (1986-96),
  • Change (1982),
  • Coming Out (1986),
  • Infotrend (1994),
  • My Life My Way (1978-81),
  • Tokyo Support Group (1985),
  • Wednesday News (1974).
There are very few lesbian and gay archives with Internet addresses. The Gerber Hart Library in Chicago has a home page at http://dial.illinois.net/~ghla/ Link opens in a new browser window but none of their holdings are listed. Also, in Philadelphia, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Library can be located at their homepage, http://wanda.point.com/~stevecap/ la0000/htm Link opens in a new browser window. Homodok, in Amsterdam, is at http://www.cologne.de/~macman/man/groups/homodok/index.html Link opens in a new browser window. The Queer Resources Directory (QRD) has a listing of periodicals, but no locations or issues are indicated: http://www.qrd.org/qrd/media/ Link opens in a new browser window.

In a few months CLGA will have its homepage ready. One of the files available for searching will be its complete l/g periodical holdings. This will be the first Internet location with extensive publishing information on l/g periodicals, and listing the actual holdings of a l/g archives collection. In time we hope to add another file that will include l/g periodicals that we have publishing information on, but no copies. This will complement the Inmagic database.

We hope to fill those many gaps in our periodical collection as others see what is missing and donate materials to us. Check out the serials database, when available, via http://www.clga.ca/.
